Visit Syros

Before asking if you’re planning to visit Syros, I first need to ask if you ever heard about this island, right? Well, this name may not be so popular among the other famous Greek islands like Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodos, Crete, etc. but it is really worth in a stop.

Syros is located in the Aegean Sea and is the capital of the Cyclades islands. It is located close to the famous Mykonos and surounded by other islands like Tinos, Paros, Naxos, Andros, Sifnos, Serifos, Kithnos, Kea. So, as you can see, there are many islands nearby, so as many connections to hop on hop off from an island to another.

Ermoupolis

The main city of the island and the bigges one is Ermoupolis, and it’s impossible to miss it, as any ferry is stopping here. It has been founded during the Greek revolution in 1820 and it soon after became the industrial and commercial leading city of Greece and its main port. Thousands of ships were built and repaired in its port, until Pireus overtook it in the 19th century.

The town has a Venetian and Cycladic influence, which are harmoniously combined especially on the city streets. The best way to explore the city it’s by foot, getting lost on the narrow white streets until getting on top for a breathtaking view.

Miaouli Square

Have a walk around Miaouli Square, especially during the night. It is filled with terraces, happy people and good vibes. Perfect to start or to end a day.

Get lost on the Streets

Getting lost on the streets it’s one of the best things you can do during your visit in Syros. You”ll discover hidden treasures and hundreds of cats. If I should baptise this place, it would be for sure the city of cats.

People

One thing that I trully enjoyed during my visit to Syros, is that I felt home. And it’s not because the place looked like home, but because it made me feel part of a big family. Walking on the streets I did saw people gathering to talk, make activities together or just admire the surroudings as we, tourists do – such a beautiful memory to take away!

Apollon Theater

This theater it has been built by an Italian architect and it has been inspired by the Scala Di Milano. Today is the cultural place of the city.

Vaporia Neighbourhood

This picturesque place it’s trully worth in a walk. It has elegant buildings and hosts the beautiful church of Saint Nicholas. Here is where you can see the richest part of the town.

Port

Walk around the port to admire the sea but also to understand why the island is the capital of the Cyclades. Many ferries are coming and leaving the port, while some yachts may stop by to explore the island. For the sunset, people are walking around to admite the last sparkling of light mirroring the clear blue water.

Ano Syros

The best way to admire the city and the Aegean Sea is to climb the stairs until the top of the hill, to Ana Syros. Take the San Giorgio church as a reference and guide yourself following the narrow streets. From here, you can see it all, till the far away islands of Mykonos and Tinos. It is a must to any visit in Syros!

Beaches

Galissas

This is the most popular beach on the island and it may get crowded. However, it is a very nice place with place for towels, sunbeds and clear blue water. It is very pleasant for kids or for those who cannot swim, as the water it’s keeping a low level for a while. Another main advantage are the restaurats and the shops near by, which many beaches do not have them.

Possidonia

This beach is as beautiful as Galissas beach, but with less restaurants and shops. The only restaurant I found, with a high top view over the bay, had high prices and limited options.

There are many other beaches to chose from, Megas Gialos, Agathopes, Vari, Kini being only some examples. As there is no beach inside the city, you need to go outside the main town, but this is how actually it should be. Relaxation means no traffic, no noise and zero polution.

Food

Well, like everywhere in Greece food it’s amazing and Syros makes no exception. Chose one of the multitude of restaurants and simply enjoy. Any choise you take will be perfect. In Greece you cannot do any mistake with the food because it’s absolutely delicious!

Transportation

Syros is easy accessible by sea, especially during the summer when are multiple ferries coming and leaving the island. I personally came from Mykonos and one way ticket, bought last minute, was around 30€. When leaving the island to go back to the mainland, to the port of Pireus, I paid around 35€ for the ferry ticket.

Inside the island it is easy to commute by public transportation. There are buses all day long transiting all the famous beaches, so I didn’t considered to rent a scooter by myself – one way ticket costs 1.6-1.8€. If want to have more flexibility and stop by for pictures, seeing remote places, then of course renting is best option.

Accommodation

As always, I did arrived on the island without accommodation. But, it couldn’t have been more easier to find one. In fact, when I got off the ferry there was a man with a placard written “accommodation”. So I did checked with him the location, the prices, and I did get one night in Ermoupolis for 30€. The location of the studio was like 3 minutes walking from the ferry, in the city center, clean, with private bathroom, internet, so just perfect. Unfortunatelly the apartment has a Greek name that I can’t remember, but if you see a man with a leg problem proposing accommodation, it must be him. It is very hard for the locals to compete with all the big hotels chains and the on-line reservations, so please help everybody to gain some money for living. Chose the locals and gain an authentic experience!

The second night on the island I did spent it in Galissa, at Angela’s Room, paying 30€ per night for an amazing room. Located in a house, in a quite location but only 3 minutes walking from the beach, the place was sparkling clean, nice decorated and the big terrace was a nice touch! I didn’t booked the place in advance, in fact I was just walking around looking for accommodation and I did stopped here. I highly recommend the place, and I would definately go back if I’d have the opportunity again. Thank you, Angela!

The End!

It may sound that this island doesn’t have something to impress. But, if you are looking for an authentic Greek experience, cheaper than the well known islands, good food, nice beaches, visit Syros. In a nutshell, this is a relaxing destination with and a perfect choise for family holidays.
